How do roof tiles get cracked?
There are different materials that go into building a roof and one of those are the roofing tiles. While these are meant to protect you, they still wear down and crack over time. Cracked tiles can be caused by impact from falling objects, freezing, and weather. Sometimes you can get away with repairing a few random tiles but in more serious cases, replacement may be necessary. Whether you need roof repairs or replacement, it’s important to know how these cracks can happen.
Causes of Broken/Cracked Roof Tiles
- Falling Objects
- Freezing and thawing
- Weather
Falling objects could be things like… a branch from that giant tree on the side of your house or, if you’re really unlucky, an aircraft losing control and landing not so graciously on the roof. No matter what the object is, it’s possible to crack a shingle with it.
When there is sitting water on the roof that freezes and thaws over and over again, this can cause the roofing tiles to crack. While the water goes through the roofing materials, the temperature fluctuating causes the cracks to occur.
Here in Phoenix, Arizona, we occasionally get a crazy hail storm that lasts about 3 minutes. It may be a short time but the falling ice can cause cracks and holes in a matter of no time. When we get strong winds during monsoon season, the tiles have a chance of peeling or lifting.

How long does a roof patch last?
A roof patch is a quick, affordable, easy fix, but most times, it’s meant to be temporary. Patches are mostly intended to buy you time rather than be a permanent fix. Roofers always stress that a roof patch should only last about six months.

There are certain times when roof patches make sense and other times when they don’t. If you live in an area that gets heavy rain, a roof patch might not last you six months or cause further damage when left unattended because rain can damage a patch. A patch is not the answer for a long-term solution if you have a roof that has already reached its life span expectancy. In this case, get with a roofing contractor and see if your roof is even worth repairs or if it’s time to invest in a whole roof replacement. If you need help deciding between a patch and a replacement, give us a call. 602.743.3175
Signs Your Home Requires a New Roof

Being a homeowner, we expect our roof to protect us forever. We never really consider the possibility of having to replace the roof when we are buying a house. People aren’t thinking about when they’ll have to replace their roof and if they are, they’ve probably worked at a roofing company! For those who have no roofing experience, here are signs that it’s about time for roof replacement.
Stains- Check for stains on the outer walls, rafters and decking underneath the shingles. If there are stains, it may be time to replace the roof. Staining is an indication of issues like wood rot and moisture.
Cracked & Curled Shingles- If your roof has shingles and is more than 15 years old, take a close look for any cracks or curling. Cracks and curls are no good!

Sagging- A sagging roof can be caused by poor workmanship, incorrect installation, undersized rafter, and extreme weight. Walk outside, step away, and look at your roof to see if you notice any sagging.
Visible Light- Get in your attic and look up to see if there is any light coming through. If yes, it might be time to call for a roof replacement. That light coming through is from cracks and holes that shouldn’t be there!

Roof Damage After a Storm
What a weird couple of weeks it has been with all this rain! Homeowners in Phoenix, Arizona is used to seeing most of the rain activity during monsoon season in the summer months. These storms aren’t just bringing more rain… the wind and hail too! We haven’t had hail in what seems like years! Maybe it’s time to check on your roof… Just think about taking the brunt of all the force your roof is withstanding as it protects you!

Mother nature sure is beautiful when she pours from the skies but does cause some issues to our roofs. Rain damage is the most common and noticeable roof damage. As your roof weakens and storms continuously beat on it, the material weakens and the shingles start lifting. When this happens, water seeps into the holes and cracks with nowhere to drain… The moisture eventually begins to cause even more damage and can even create problems inside the home.
Storms in Arizona can be dangerous when the intense winds roll in. We see trampolines flying from backyard to backyard, a wall of dust coming straight at us, and our freshly washed car getting smacked with that wall of dust. What we don’t see is that shingle starting to lift up, completely come off, and fly away! You could be missing many pieces of your roof and you wouldn’t even know unless you checked. This brings us back to water damage because the rain, hail, and occasional snowfall can sit right where your shingles and other roofing materials are supposed to be!
Hail seems to be showing up more and more out of the blue. These balls of ice range from all different sizes. Some are as small as a pea while others can be as big as a soccer ball! No matter how big or how small, ice hitting your roof does damage. It may not be right away but overtime hail can breakdown the roofs material, creating issues in the future.

Should you replace or repair your roof?
Maybe you have a leak, or there is just a spot on your roof that’s looking a little bit rough; how do you know when it’s time to replace your roof or just repair the damage?
The first step you need to take for any issues with your roof is to get it inspected by a trusted roofing contractor. A professional will be able to search for small damage or structural damage and be able to tell the difference. An inspection is most important because you may not need a full roof repair for a small area, and you wouldn’t want to only patch a small area when your whole roof needs to be replaced.

When deciding if you need a repair or replacement, consider the age and condition of your roof also. If your roof is over ten years old and there is significant damage, often the best choice is just to replace the whole thing. If your roof is newer and was just damaged in a small area from a storm or bad weather, then having a repair in that area might be all that’s needed. The general rule of thumb is that if the damage affects more than 30% of your roof, it’s better to replace it.
Oftentimes, cost has a lot to do with people’s decision on repairing or replacing. In the long run, if a professional has recommended a whole new roof, going that route will save money on further damage to the home or the structure that could have been avoided if the roof had been replaced. If cost is something you are concerned with, most homeowners insurance will cover roof replacement, depending on your policy.
If you think there’s an issue with your roof with their, small or large, give us a call for an inspection. 623.743.3175
Avoid Roof Damage from Hanging Holiday Lights
Whether you’re just now getting around to putting up Halloween decorations or can’t wait to hang the Christmas lights, you’ll want to make sure you aren’t damaging the roof in the process. Putting up holiday decorations should be fun and uplifting… not damaging! People tend to use methods that aren’t the safest or sturdiest. Learn tips to avoid unnecessary roof damage this holiday season!
Avoid putting holes in the roof. Using screws, nails, and even staples leave holes in your shingles causing damage. As soon as you take those nails and staples out, those holes can fill with water that can cause the roof to rot. Be cautious about also putting holes in the wood around the perimeter of the roof to avoid wood rot. No holes in the gutters either!
You’re probably thinking, “well how am I supposed to hang my lights now?!” You can use plastic clips! I personally find everything I need on Amazon but you’ll find some at the store too. Know what you’re hanging so you can decide which clips will work best for your roof and decorations. It’s not recommended to attach the clips to the shingles but, if necessary, DO NOT lift the shingles to do so. When the shingles get lifted, the bond to the roof can break and the roof tile can crack. When it’s time to put away the decorations, carefully remove the clips one at a time.
Refrain from walking on your roof. Not only is it dangerous but you could really cause damage. Walking on the roof can weaken and crack the shingles. Again, this can create water damage to the roof and even the walls and ceiling inside the home. So, you’d have lots of repairs needed that you probably don’t want to worry about after spending so much money on gifts!
This holiday season, be mindful of your roof. Don’t make holes, use clips, and don’t walk all over it. Save yourself money by using these tips. If you already have roof damage, Almeida Roofing can help you! 602-743-3175

Is It Time To Replace Your Roof?
A house wouldn’t be very useful without a roof… it is the most essential part of the home. The roof protects our home from water damage and outside elements. Unfortunately, like with anything else, wear and tear happens overtime. It is important to know the signs when you should replace your roof to avoid property damage and injury. Don’t overlook the condition of your roof!
6 Signs It Is Time To Replace The Roof
1.) Water Damage: Take a peak upstairs or in the attic for signs of moisture. There could be brown, yellow, or grey stains. Peeling paint on the wall and ceilings also demonstrates a roof leak. If there is dampness in the attic, the roof is weakened causing water to get inside.

2.) Life Expectancy: On average, a roof can last 20-50 years depending on the type. Get records on when the roof was installed and if/ when it was replaced so you can guesstimate when it’ll be time to replace.
3.) Sagging: A sagging and droopy roof is an indication that moisture got captured causing boards under the roof to rot. Walk across the street to look at your roof. It’s supposed to look straight so you should be able to see any sagging.

4.) Mold & Fungi: I know, gross right? If you see mold and fungi, check for a possible roof leak. Not only is it absolutely disgusting but it’s not good for you and your family to breath in. Address the water leak and make sure to get rid of the mold and fungi too!
5.) Curling Shingles: If you see the shingles curled, it signals that they’re no longer securely attached and are damaged.
6.) Missing Shingles & Other Material: We have the best monsoon storms here in Arizona and they’re really cool to watch but then the next morning you walk out of your house to a tree on top of your car… not so cool. That wind gets intense! The high winds can cause your shingles to fly off along with the materials that are keeping everything intact.

Take the time to check the condition of your roof. Need repair or replacement, call a professional. If you’d like a specialist to inspect the condition of your roof, Almeida Roofing is always here to help! We will document our findings and walk through them with you. Whether you decide to repair or replace, we can help with that too!
